Of Charice Pempengco and her growing fame( Part 1)
Oh how I wish I could pull off some of the songs Charice so easily belts out. But then again, she's different.
Born to a troubled family in the Phillipines, Charice took the world by surprise when a youtube user "Falsevoice" posted one of her many jaw-dropping videos on youtube. That video saw her performing the ever so famous Dreamgirls anthem "And I am Telling you I am not Going" on one of Korea's leading variety TV shows "Star King". She was 14.
Ellen DeGeneres stumbled across the video and was memsmerized by the now 15-year-old. Ellen subsequently extended an invitation to Charice to perform on her show. This would be America's first encounter with the petite diva. Sometime in December 2007, Charice flew to the States where she performed in front of a live audience on the Ellen Degeneres Christmas Special.
She belted out two of her favourite songs - "And I am telling you" popularized by Jennifer Hudson and "I will always Love you" by Whitney Houston. She brought the crowd to their feet. Charice was moved to tears by the encouraging and almost overwhelming response from the crowd. Ellen told Charice that she was amazing.
I was almost left paralysed in my seat as I was watching the video. Her voice reverberated down my spine and I could feel goose pimples all over my body.She was in complete control of her voice. She belted out the two songs flawlessly. Her voice did not fizzle at all. Given the difficultness of the two songs, taking into account the fact that both were sung by two highly reputable vocal powerhouse females, one could easily go off pitch attempting the songs.
Here comes the interesting part. Oprah Winfrey heard about this little big star and immediately expressed interest in meeting her. It was reported that she actually pulled Charice and her mom off the plane, which was bound for the Phillipines from America. LOL XD. In May 2008, Charice made her first ever appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show singing "I Have Nothing" by Whitney Houston. Her performance sent the crowd into a frenzy. Oprah dubbed her the most talented girl in the world.
Oprah with her many connections made things even more exciting for the young Filipino. Oprah requested Grammy award winning song-writer-producer, David Foster ( the same man who produced the Bodyguard medley for Whitney Houston) to let Charice perform on his Las Vegas show in Mandalay Bay. David acceded to Oprah's request after watching some of Charice's videos on youtube. On that night, which would be instrumental in Charice's growing international stardom, David gave a brief introduction before the young diva came out and took control of the stage. Now 16, she did not show a hint of anxiety. Her well-defined composure was almost unbelievable. She was standing in front of a 20 000 strong aundience calmly and gracefully belting out "I Have Nothing and I will Always Love you", both popularly referred to as the Bodyguard medley. She brought the house down! David, who was almost rendered breathless by Charice's voice, said " Wow, a star is born tonight!"

Exam!
I am writing this entry with a heave of sigh. Come 5th Nov, I'll be taking my examination for Cardiovascular system. It'll start of with the practical examination on 5th Nov itself, where we'll be required to perform auscultation among many other skills that we have learned. On the following day, we will be writing a 3-hour long paper, which will put our theory to the test.
In spite of being stressed out, I still enjoy the whole process of running thru my books like crazy trying to recapitulate inportant points along the way, while ensuring I keep in mind what I am looking for. It's fun and crazy! Ironically, I'm loving it. I think pre-exam stress is fundamental in moulding a student into a learner. I'll elaborate more on this when I get the time to do so. right now I gotta take my leave.
Will write soon. =)))

Festival of Lights
That time of the year is here again! The time where people would get together and exchange laughter, joy and stories from the past year over murukus and other scrumptious Indian delicacies. Diwali as it is known, is the festival of lights. It is a celebration of how good always triumphs over evil.
I have always heard of talks about Good versus evil and of how Good always wins since I was at my mother's knees. The story of the killing of Narakasura by Krishna's wife corroborated this. My point is, Diwali may be the time of celebration for the Hindus only but the significance of the celebration is profound and its message of Good overpowering evil is universal. Because of Diwali, I always believe in the immense power that light possesses. It drives away the DARK! It makes things clearer for us (metaphorically speaking)... it helps us set our paths right, simply preventing us from sidetracking in life ( of course this is how I look at it =))), not everyone does. hehe )
So let's all celebrate Diwali. Be it a simple spiritual celebration ( on our part) or an elaborate one( for the Hindus)
I think I'm becoming long-winded..Anyway on a final note: To all those who are celebrating the Festival of Lights this year... Happy Diwali! =))) This Diwali dedication goes out especially to my peers in AIMST university. HAVE FUN GUYS!

Guilt Stricken!
Try as I may, I could not deny the fact that I dozed off in class again. But this time was different. I think the lecturer actually caught me sleeping. I tried to keep awake. But i guess I couldn't help it.
It was the third consecutive lecture of the day. And it was after lunchtime. I was seated just three rows away from where my lector stood as he delivered his lecture. Let's call him Prof here.
At first, I was able to keep myself awake. Then my eyes would betray me. They would shut against my will. But, I still managed to keep them wide open. All of the sudden, I felt that Prof became very distant, his voice was hardly audible, then for a split second I couldn't hear anything but my inner conscience telling myself to keep awake..but to no avail. Then my head fell sideways. I jerked and I woke up almost instantaneously. As my eyes opened, I could tell that Prof was staring at me. His face was a blur at first. But when it became clearer, I was 100% sure he was looking at me...and I thought I was in for trouble. Fortunately for me, he continued with his lecture without reprimanding me.
It was either Lady Luck was by my side or Prof was just being gracious and didn't want to humiliate me in front of my friends
.
I know one thing for sure though...and that is I've insulted prof. to think I have slept through his lecture...haiz. I honestly feel bad. I'm so guilt-struck!

After much consideration, I've finally decided that I would keep a blog. I have never been one who is willing to make the extra effort to do anything.However, to some extent I do go the extra mile to do some things... like reading the textbook or look up some interesting reading materials on the internet to occupy myself. Other than that, I am what you can call a lazy bum.
Physically, I'm not short ( wonder if that makes me tall =PPP), thin and tan. People often mistake me for being a Malay, while I'm actually of pure Chinese ancestry. I'm very used to it =) On one occasion, I was mistaken for an Orang Asli. hmmmm. That was the first. Anyway I enjoy making people guess my ethnicity. I'm just so atypical. Haha.
Oh ya. I'm a medico. In my 2nd year of med school now. yay! =) Didn't want to forget to mention that. I'm studying in AIMST university. And as an undergraduate here, I do not enjoy hearing some of the tastelessly schlocky things people say about AIMST.
Naturally, these are people who are studying in some other universities. And since the remarks are tawdry, I do not wish to mention them here.
Anyway, I am making a pledge here.. to publish at least one post a week.HAHA. Hope i could keep to what I said. =)
